What is Nadi Astrology

The Rishis or holy sages of ancient India applied their minds and discovered many arts and sciences for the well being of future generations.  One such science is astrology.  There are several branches in astrology or horoscope i.e. casting and reading of horoscopes based on the position of planets at the time of birth of a person and the movements of the planets across the zodiac.  This is a well developed science as evidenced from ancient manuscripts like Brihat samhits, Jathaka Paarijatha, etc.  Palmistry, numerology and Nadi reading are the other disciplines.
These days we hear about people with powers of extra sensory perceptions (ESP).  The Rishis were holy sages who occupied themselves with concentrating on the one Divine Being Paramatma.  They far exceeded the powers of ESP people.  More than that, they were able to know the future by their foresight.  With this foresight the Rishis like Agasthiya, Kousika, and Vasishta have given prediction for the human beings occupying this world.  Let us take for instance any particular moment of a day.  Many lives are born in this world at any given moment – human lives, plant life and animals.  The Rishis have ignored the last two and confined their predictions only to human beings.  And that not for all the humans.  Predictions are given only for such of those persons, who the Rishis out of their wisdom envisaged will come forward to study these predictions. The exact age in which each such person will come for this study has also been foretold by these Rishis.

These predictions were inscribed on palm leaves, like many other arts and sciences of ancient day.  They were also in Sanskrit.  Later Tamil kings gathered all such palm leaves irrespective of the subject they dealt with and stored them in big libraries.  These leaves which are the repository of the wisdom of ancient Rishis would otherwise have been lost to us.  The king of Tanjore, a true patron of arts and science found a reserve for these palm leaves in his palace library.  He also got them translated into Tamil with the help of pundits.  The palm leaves containing the astrological inscription, at the present day, are stored in the libraries in Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu, South India.

Before revealing the predictions of each person, a palm leaf is first identified by furnishing a person’s date of birth, planetary position at the time of the person’s birth, parentage, name of some close relatives, position in life, marital status etc.  After this the prediction for the individual follow from the date of the person’s studying the Nadi to their last day.  The past i.e. the happenings from date of birth to date of studying the leaf are not covered.  The palm leaf with one’s prediction is obtained through the person’s thumb impression, left for the ladies, right for the gents.

There are 16 chapters in Nadi reading that one can choose from, concerning such matters as relationships, family life, health and wealth, spiritual life etc.  The chapter General Predictions is always read first, followed by two remedy chapters (13 and 14).  Other chapters are read according to a particular person’s wish.   

For the happening of these predictions the Rishi insists that the person should be free of any previous birth sins.  The Rishi therefore suggests and specifies the performance of certain remedies to wipe off to the maximum extent any such balance of sins.  If these remedies are performed (only once) with full involvement, the Rishi assures the happening of the events predicated by him.

What kinds of remedies are prescribed in the scriptures
and how do they work?

In your NADI reading, in the remedy chapters, specific remedies to you will be written and recommended in these scriptures.  While perhaps it is impossible to get away from your karma, the remedies will ‘soften’ the effects of your last birth sins and karma.  A good analogy for that is that the NADI pundit will tell you that it is going to rain in your life.  There is nothing you can do to stop that rain, but you can take an umbrella with you.  A remedy is like that umbrella.

The remedies that you will be given in your NADI reading are very precise.  For example you might be given a specific pooja (ritual) to perform.  How to do that and what specific pooja materials you will need – all of that information will be given to you by the scriptures.  It will be written there which temples you ought to visit and what healing that will provide.  It will list what kind of worship you have to do in a particular temple.

Remedies differ from individual to individual,
but the most common once are the following:

	Visiting the Nava Graha - Nine Planets temples, performing archana and pooja (Vedic rituals) in these temples
	Giving offerings in the Nava Graha temples
	Special yagya (Vedic ritual involving chanting of mantras). This yagya lasts 192 days continuously. All of the pundits performing this yagya are Nadi readers, chief pundits.  This yagya is done in a special sacred place and only chief pundits are allowed to enter that place and be present during the yagya (therefore we cannot provide photographs from this yagya).  This yagya, like other yagyas, involves chanting holy Vedic mantras to God (devatas) to neutralize your last birth’s sins and karmas, to reduce your difficulties in your present life, to better your life, to realize your mistakes and make more progress in this life.  After the 192 days are over and the special yagya is completed you will get a talisman for protection.  This talisman will have been present during the whole yagya with the pundits and it will have acquired holy vibrations.  You are supposed to keep it in a sacred place to you, close to you, in your home, or car etc.  The talisman and prasad will be sent to you after the completion of the yagya.
	Gurudan and Gurudakshina  This is an offering of cash, pooja materials (such as dresses) and other things according to your individual reading by the NADI reader (pundit). NADI scriptures were written by Maharishis who were able to see, predict.  However these Maharishis are not alive now and it is the NADI reader, the NADI pundit that is reading your predictions on the behalf of these Maharishis.  For the duration of the session of your NADI reading, your NADI reader is equal to Maharishi who wrote that scripture.  Therefore we must do extra offerings to these NADI pundits as one of the remedies (this is of course only if it is specified in your reading).  This offering can be part of your remedies and it is done after the reading - if you wish to do your remedies.

	Press your thumb on the pad and then press it on the piece of blank paper several times. First press hard, second time not so hard (with medium force), third time lightly. Repeat that process several times, so that we have several impressions to choose from, we will choose the clearest one.
